As one of the “New 7 Wonders of the World”, the Great Wall of China is indeed on the top list of things to do in Beijing.
The Great Wall stretches thousands of miles from east to west and it was built over 2,000 years. Around 220 B.C., Qin Shi Huang (First Emperor of Qin) ordered the construction of a united defense system against invasions from the north. Construction continued up to the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), when the Great Wall became the world’s largest military structure.
Among several sections, the most notable ones are Badaling and Mutianyu.
Badaling Great Wall is the earliest section of the Great Wall of China opening to tourists. It is in Yanqing District, 60 kilometers (37 miles) to the northwest of Beijing downtown. Badaling Great Wall is also one of the most notable section.
It is one of the most notable Great Wall section in Beijing, and is the essence of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty. Mutianyu Great Wall is 70 kilometers (43 miles) away from Beijing city center.
